Niagara Falls: Finding God’s Hand in the Perfect Stay

Published on October 10, 2024 at 6:11 PM

Sometimes a "perfect" trip is the one that doesn’t go according to plan. We expected to get close to the falls, but the weather had other ideas. What followed was a series of unexpected gifts that proved God’s hand is in the details—even when the weather doesn't cooperate.

More Than a Tourist Destination

They call Niagara Falls the 'Honeymoon Capital of the World,' but for me, it became a classroom for trusting God’s timing.

I didn't realize that a rainy morning and a specific date on the calendar would lead to one of the most personal God-incidences I've ever experienced. This is why I no longer believe in coincidences.

Now, isn't the image stunning, wanting you to make that trip to see first-hand this remarkable Niagara Falls, a hands-down natural wonder located on the border between the United States and Canada?

It truly is a photographer's delight! The breathtaking beauty and immense power, roaring non-stop, captivate visitors from around the globe, making it the envy of all other falls. Nothing comes close.

And, it is as if one majestic waterfall isn't enough—Niagara Falls comprises three striking waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. I have to say, it is for this reason that Niagara Falls captures the most attention from nature lovers.

Yes, all three together create the grand show, complementing each other perfectly. No wonder so many find their way to the falls, either on the U.S. or Canadian side, to relish the experience of witnessing this amazing and popular vacation destination.

A Room with a God-Given View

The Horseshoe Falls, located on the Canadian side, is the largest of the three, producing a stunning mist that rises high into the sky, creating an almost magical ambience—day and night—much like how hot springs spewing mist into the air.

And, yes, it is admired for its famous curved shape.

Tourists flock to the falls lingering all day and even to late in the night, struck by the thundering roar of the water as it crashes over the cliffs. You can hear it even from a distance.

The nightly fireworks show on the Horseshoe Falls side rewards the tourists, a colorful finale to their day-long marveling at the sights.

And, the falls are illuminated in vibrant colors! Morphing colors that add another layer of spectacular beauty to this natural wonder.

On the US side, are the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, though smaller, are just as fascinating. And all three make for that grand presentation. I call it, "Triple Delight!"

There are countless ways to experience Niagara Falls up close.

The famous Maid of the Mist boat tour allows visitors to journey right to the base of the falls for that up-close encounter, where they can feel the full force of the cascading water.

This is why raincoats are provided for coverage, as the splashing water is powerful enough to get you soaking wet.

You have to try these boat tours. We did, and we'll do it again!

A visit to Niagara Falls isn't just a chance to be awed by its natural splendor; it's also an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual experience it offers. It's easy to see God's artistic touch in His creation.

The grandeur of the falls serves as a reminder of His almighty power. Simply standing before such an awe-inspiring sight can move one to acknowledge a higher power, as the beauty of the falls leads you to reflect on God's power.

Yes, the power behind these falls carries both an undeniable literal and figurative association with God.

But as much as the falls moved me, it was what happened next that truly caught my heart...

When the Rain Becomes a Blessing

Right here is where the title to this article truly render that spiritual meaning...

Who knew that choosing a place to stay during your visit could feel like part of a spiritual journey, trusting that God will guide you to the perfect hotel for rest and reflection after your adventure?

I sure didn’t. I left it all to God, thinking we just had to enjoy our accommodations, especially since it was our first time visiting the area. That's what I always do when we plan our vacations.

Here is what happened...

On the second day of our visit, it rained. Yes, in the middle of summer!

Thankfully, we had other places in our itinerary for that day, including a drive up to Toronto, which was quite a distance away. But there was no need to leave early.

Stuck in our hotel room for nearly the entire morning, we were amazed at how God orchestrated everything so that we didn’t miss out on the joy of exploring the sights. And I’ll tell you why...

And yes, the hotel front desk gave us the perfect spot to enjoy all three falls.

We booked a hotel room with a view of the falls— all three of them! While many tourists got soaked basking in the beauty of the surroundings, we stayed comfortable and dry in our room, overlooking the falls. If this isn't the work of God, I don't know what is.

I don't believe in coincidences anymore. This was no coincidence. It did not stop there, however.

A Spiritual Home Away from Home: The Carmelite Monastery

Located just a short distance from the famous Niagara Falls, the Carmelite Monastery, is tucked away in the scenic beauty of Niagara Falls, offering a peaceful retreat for those seeking spiritual renewal and a deeper connection with God.

This serene sanctuary, operated by the Discalced Carmelite nuns, is a place of prayer, reflection, and solitude. This is where the hustle and bustle of everyday life fades away, leaving visitors with a sense of calm and inner peace. My family felt that.

A little bit about the Carmelite Order, it is one of the oldest and most revered religious orders in the Catholic Church. It's rich history is rooted in contemplative prayer and devotion to God.

The Discalced Carmelites, a reform branch founded by St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross in the 16th century, emphasize a life of simplicity, silence, and prayer, dedicating their lives to God through contemplation.

The word "discalced" refers to the practice of going barefoot as a symbol of humility and renunciation of worldly comforts. Yes, my friends. So admirable!

My Personal Connection to St. Teresa of Avila

The nuns of the Carmelite Monastery in Niagara live a cloistered life, meaning they remain within the monastery, separated from the outside world, so they can fully dedicate themselves to prayer and service.

Their mission is to intercede for the needs of the world and pray for the intentions of those who visit or write to them for spiritual support. Similar to the cloistered nuns of the Convention of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Baguio City, Philippines, also known as the "Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters," or simply, the "Pink Sisters."

True, all admirable and beautiful background to the Discalced Carmelites, but what I haven't yet mentioned is my "special attachment" to the Carmelites. Why is that?

The "Saintly Similarity"

Well, I was baptized on St. Teresa of Avila's feast day!

A not-so-little-known fact about this saint and Doctor of the Church—one of only four female spiritual doctors in the faith—is that she wrote books on spirituality, despite having no formal background in writing. And I happen to love writing...

I love this little connection here.!

The Carmelite Monastery in Ontario in all its glory symbolizing a towering harbor for souls on a weary journey.

And here's one more: she suffered from terrible headaches, yet she persisted with her writing, all because she wanted to share her faith and understanding of Catholicism. I also get headaches, especially at the onset of summer. Imagine the look on my face when I learned of this!

I am in no way citing peculiar saintly similarities here, as I am nowhere near her spirituality and writing prowess, but quite frankly, it excited me. This was the start of my attachment with the Carmelites order.

And here is where I was moved by this experience—having set foot in this monastery. Our initial plan for this summer was to visit Chicago, Illinois.

I know there is a church dedicated to St. Therese of Lisieux somewhere in Illinois, which I would love to visit when given the chance. However, our vacation plans changed; the family opted to go to Ontario to see the falls.

Days before our departure, we planned our itinerary. I was surprised to learn that the monastery was not far from the hotel.

I screamed for joy, as I am also a devotee of this young doctor of the Church!

A woman in the sun with arms outstretches signifying quiet surrender and basking in the goodness of God.

I felt so loved—the kind of feeling that comes from knowing God understands the desires of our hearts.

He makes a way to satisfy our hearts when those desires align with His inspirations and will for us.

This is why I am confident that the things we hold dear in our hearts are in God’s hands. There’s no doubt that if they reflect His love, He will take care of them.

Our Niagara Falls vacation served both as a leisure getaway and a pilgrimage to this monastery. I prayed before this saint's relic—just her and me. I loved every second spent there.

If we happened to reside in the area, I know I would frequent the monastery—not only to spend time in prayer but also to sit on the beautifully maintained grounds opposite the monastery, which provide an atmosphere of peace and reflection for those who visit.

The benches look so inviting, designed to foster a spirit of contemplation and focus on God. I would want to linger a little longer if I could.

It was a wonderful vacation to bask in the beauty of the Niagara Falls, and experience God's loving maneuvering to add to the experience!

Whether you're seeking adventure, tranquility, or a spiritual connection with nature, Niagara Falls offers something for everyone.
